HRC & SCI Make Debut: Minister Launches Container Transhipment at CCT

CHENNAI, Sept. 22 — Chennai Port has moved one step closer to becoming a prominent hub port on the East Coast of India. This major milestone follows the successful transhipment of the first lot of Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) containers onto HRC Shipping’s feeder vessel, the “m.v. Banga Lanka,” on September 15, 2002.

The Formal Launch

In a traditional ceremony held on Saturday, September 14, the Honorable Minister of State for Shipping, Mr. S. Thirunavukkarasar, lit the ceremonial lamp and formally inaugurated the container transhipment operations at the Chennai Container Terminal (CCT).

Strategic Partnerships

HRC Shipping, based in Dhaka, is a premier containerized feeder operator in the Indian subcontinent. The company recently received an official license from the Director General (DG) of Shipping to operate a dedicated coastal service on the East Coast of India.

The logistical and commercial operations for HRC Shipping are being managed by specialized local partners:

• Chennai Operations: Looked after by M/s. SAR Shipping Co. (India) Pvt. Ltd.

• Haldia Operations: Handled by the J.M. Baxi Group.

Commemorating the Milestone

To mark the occasion, a memento was jointly presented by CCTPL and HRC to SCI, honoring them as the very first customer to tranship containers at Chennai Port. The presentation took place during the official launch event in the presence of the Honorable Minister for Shipping.
